The Solution To Fake Truffle Oil.

By now you must have heard of the 'truffle oil' scam.

A chemical compound called 2,4-dithiapentane that mimics the scent of Italian truffles is listed as 'truffle essence' or 'flavour' on the label, mix with generic olive oil, and bam, twenty-five dollars, please.

It does the rounds on the news just like fake olive oil from Greece and Italy, and just like the fake olive oil from Greece and Italy there's never a solution, because, I think, the market does not care.

Here's a solution: buy an actual truffle, shave it, and top it with olive oil.

I did it this week, and it cost me around the same price as buying from the fancy grocery with the duck logo.

250ml good quality olive oil
2.5g black truffle, shaved

Mix.

Even at the insane level of $5000/kg price point of truffle at the moment, you’re still ahead compared to buying from the duck shop.

At 1% (2.5g out of 250ml) concentration this still looks absurdly abundant compared to the ones on supermarket shelves.

How do I buy 2.5g worth of truffle? Simple, you buy 10g and use the rest to make black truffle pasta.

At 1.3% (5g truffle to 250g flour and 125g liquid) concentration, my truffle pasta also looked absurdly abundant. Just shows any truffle product is a blatant rip-off.

I have to paywall the next because I'm about to reveal industry secrets.
